Hello Fellow Vetteheads: Does anyone have a remedy for the loose ball swivel on the mirror, short of purchasing a new one? When speeds are abit excessive at times the mirror will not stay put,it really bugs the h... out of me, and no I will not slow down to keep it adjusted it is a VETTE and needs it's excersize at times. Loctite makes a number of clear adhesives that will do the job. Just a drop or two is needed.

A band aid approach (solves the immediate problem but doesn't permanently fix it) is to pull the mirror head full down and add a large drop of blue Loktite to the ball. Position your seat in the normal driving positioin and set the mirror as you like it. Let it sit for an hour or more and drive. We did this on my friend's car and it worked all summer. The only real fix is to stick the mirror into a container of lacquer thinner overnight and allow it to soften the adhesive. Gently remove the glass and use a sharp punch to pean the metal bracket so that it tightens the ball.

My passenger side does the same, re-adjusts itself when you close the door. I think it is because of the car cover always "hanging" on it. I cover it in the garage so the cat won't mess up the paint. I am building a detached garage as we speak so I'll likely not cover it in there unless Im doing other "projects" in there. I'll try the loctite aproach though.

Here's what worked for me:

Removed the mirror, put it in a vice, rotated the mirror as far as possible on the ball. Scored the ball in a few places with a punch.

Its been nice and tight for two years.

Default A couple of solutions from past posts:

1. If the head is loose at the ball socket take off the mirror and put it a flat pan of laquer thinner covering the head. In 24 hours the mirror will come out. Tap the heads of the squash on metal bracket with a ball peen hammer. Don't go too much or they will break. When it is tight put mirror back in with silicone.
2. Once you have the glass off, you can also replace the 'ball socket clip' (PN# 1018537, spring-steel u-shaped clip maintains tension on the ball socket bracket). The description is in Dr Rebuild's catalog. The clip is $3.00.

This fix sounds like it is for the rear view mirror but it works none the less. Nice use of the search function though.

Here is what worked for us. Check to see if the mirror is loose on the door. All I had to do was remove it and get down to the anchor screws in the door. I "tightened" them up and now the mirrow does not move going down teh road. While driving down the road hold the stem in your hand with out holding the mirror part. If the mirror does not move on the ball then, you may want to look at how tight it is on the door.

nice use of some blue collar comedy but all kidding aside with the mirror loose like that you will have to send the car to the salvage yard or you could sell it to me for a very reasonable price of lets say $5.00 and all your problems will be solved OK OK all kidding aside it sounds like the loctite idea seems like the best idea to me.
