Has anyone had Problems with MSD Box and overheating?
Hi guys I was jsut out this afternoon with my dad we were trying to put some more miles on his vette. Well he's having problems with his engine it's overheating. Has anyone else had problems with the engine temperature going up after putting on the MSD Ignition Box and Distributor. He is using Champion RC12YC spark plugs, and his engine is a 454. Any suggestions would help out because he is getting so fed up with his car, it seems after he puts on newer technology parts and what not he goes backwards
It could be running too lean but I doubt that is the problem. You didn't say if this was town driving or highway. Also, where are you driving? With that big block you need a really an efficient cooling system. I would seriously look at an aluminum rad and electric fans. One thing though, have you checked your original cooling system to make sure the thermostat is working properly, fan clutch is working, hoses aren't colapsing, shroud is ok, seals around the rad good? We really need more info before we can give good advise.

If it didn't overheat before and those were the only changes, I'd suspect a timing problem (too little advance). Different distributors and vacuum advance units have different characteristics and perhaps something is different enough with the new set up to cause the problem. Fortunately, MSD distributors come with all the pieces needed to recurve it if needed. Also, are you sure that timing was reset properly after the swap? Under what conditions is it overheating? Idle? Highway?
