I have all the tools and R-12 I need to recharge my AC in my 79. System worked great before I busted the lines to change out and detail engine compartment. Where can I find a good articale on recharging the system. How do I measure from a 20lb bottle to get 3 lbs ?
if you have a good scale put the cylinder on it zero out the scale or wait untill it hits 17lbs and when it reaches 3 lbs your done. Or if you have a manifold guage you can add the refergerant untill the proper pressure temperature is reached.
Yes I have more than enough AC tools, my brother inlaw was a AC tech before he passed away last year. I guess I should have payed more attention to what he was doing.
The infor I need is what pressures at the AC gauges do i need..Thanks for the replys. At least i have someware to start...
You will need to get a vacuum pump to evacuate the system before filling. Also, I would go by weight of refrigerant, not by pressure. Pressure in the system will vary depending on ambient temperatures. It is necessary, however, to make sure your system is functioning properly. Also, make sure all of your hoses and o-rings are leak free. I'd replace all o-rings, and if the hoses are old, them too before filling. R-12 is too expensive these days to find out your system is leaking after the fact. The reciever/dryer should also be replaced as these will absorb water (which gets re-released and can freeze) if the system is open for long. I've seen hoses that looked OK bubble like crazy when just a little soapy water was applied to them meaning the refrigerant was leaking out like water through a sieve.
