Default 4spd acting up, need advice

The last couple days I noticed I couldnt down shift into 2nd at all, even at stop sign. But if I go through the gears 1st to 4th it seems ok.
So I got under the car checked linkage at nuetral position and both levers perfectly straight up with no loose connections or anything obvious. Now today at a stop light, I put it in 1st but the car wouldnt move until I fiddled enough with it and finally got to work. I dont think I'm going to make it home tonight.

So.... my question is, would the tranny gears or synchros be able to cause this type of situation? I had the tranny rebuilt 12,000 miles ago.
Or does this sound like linkage only problem? THX

My 0.02 is on the linkage. With age those things start to act up and a new Hurst setup is a really nice improvent over stock.

I thought I found a loose bolt in the linkage housing. But after tightening I still have same problem. Could the clutch cause this kind of problem?

Not sure about the 4 speeds, but years ago had shifting issues with a 57 chevy PU (three on the tree) and it was the bushings in the linkage...

Edit:Assume you put new clutch in,so checking pedal free play is a good idea also....

ditto on the bushings and Hurst. There are some good websites for 4 speed info. You might try Autogear.com or Auto Gear Equipment Company that specializes in Muncies....has good parts and price list (XPENSIVVVE!) to download/review. Also, have developed some better ideas for old problems such as a stronger shifter plate which may be part of your problem. I'm assuming you have a Muncie or T10 BorgWarner.
Muncie4speed.com is another, vetteproducts.net, pipersauto.com (then go to 4 Speeds by Darrell Shepherd)
Hurst has a "how to adjust linkage" page on their site
I've recently got a Hurst for mine because the old linkage just wasn't worth dealing with.
good luck on getting it fixed soon, that makes Vettes look bad jim

Sounds like the synchros to me.

Now there's a whining sound around the tranny area that speeds up with tire rotation and not engine rpm. I checked drive shaft and its not touching anything. I think the tranny is about to go.
