Is there any real advantage (freeing up any HP) to installing an electric fuel pump over the stock mechanical (No, I really don't need to flow 100 gph). Just thought about doing it for something else to do.

I use electric because I have had 2 accidents where the mechanical pump has ruptured and fill the crankcase with raw gas until the oil comes out the dip stick. That can't be good for the bearings.
The next thing is I always shut the pump off about 1/4 mile from home so the float bowls don't sit full of gas and maybe boil over when heat soaked flooding my expensive engine. I shut the fuel off anytime I am going to shut the motor down, even pulling in for gas I shut down 1/4 mile away.
I just prime briefly until I see the fuel pressure flutter, shut the pump down, start the engine and then turn on the fuel pump. If anything happend to a float the motor would die from flooding, I don't want to pump the motor full of fuel.
It also acts as a great thieft device with a hidden switch turning off the pump.

I have had one for years. I don't do the on/off deal the others speak of, but I do drive mine often. Just make sure you put in the oil pressure kill switch for safety reasons. Easy and cheap.
I think the advantage occurs if you switch to fuel injection and need the higher pressure. The high cost of electric pumps over rides any other benefit I can think of.
If you want something to do, replace your mechanical fan...
