Default Building a 383.

I know what components to purchase and how to do all the work, but what I am having trouble with is sorting through all the different manufactures. I have been out of the loop for a while and have lost track. I like Edelbrock parts and will use their 70cc 2.02 heads and High-rise intake. Any suggestions for the other necessary parts, such as forged flat-top pistons, internally balanced crank, cam, etc. Money is no issue. I am just curious which parts are the highest quality and will yield the best performance.

Very detailed, what do you think everything cost and any estimate of HP & torque?
Thanks

Wow! Thanks! Dang, that is as detailed as I'll ever need. I guess I start searching. I was expecting manufacture suggestions, but you gave me an entire setup! Thanks again.

Default SonnyMarrow - no problem

Glad I could help out. The balanced cast steel crank is good to 6500-7000 RPM. If you have the money you may want to go to a SCAT Forged crank.

Here is their website www.scatcrankshafts.com

Good Luck

I really appreciate this list. I have began looking up al the parts and they look great. I told my friend, who is a racing enthuseist, about the parts and he said it is better to not spend the money on the internally balanced crank, and get a 400 crank and change the harmonic balancer. I usually believe him because of all the great cars he has and has built, but this is iffy. He used a 400 crank, in his 400. From my understanding you have to mill away parts of the oil pan railings at the 7 & 8 cylinders for the 400 crank to clear the block, and the 350 crank, you don't, even though they offer the same stroke and CI increase. Any suggestions on this issue?

Default I'm no expert but I

think an internally balanced crank is the way to go. I believe you need more than just a different damper. believe you also need a special flywheel with counterweights for balancing.

I wish I knew a more technical means to explain this. It just makes sense to me that it would be better for the internal stresses of the crank, etc. if the crank was balanced internally vs. just at each end. I believe this would be even more critical for a performance engine.

I would go with the Scat 9000 series vs. a used OEM 400 crank though, it's stronger than the OEM, or at least that's what Scat states.

I spoke to Scat about the crank in my engine and they said due to it being internally balanced and the 9000 series metal that it was actually good to 600 HP and 8000 RPM but that is on the outer limits, I would go forged if I was going to rev it that high.

I have the Eagle cast crank and forged Rods internally balanced and spin to 6500rpm all day long. However, my AFRs and Victor Jr is where the power comes from.

The Vic Edelbrock "crate" engine signature series. It's a 383 cubic inch and it includes Vic's signature (engraved on the air cleaner). It's all hand built by Edelbrock employees, blueprinted, balanced, run on the dyno, etc. I've seen these engines at the Edelbrock plant here. I don't think you can really buy a better quality engine. (Unless you really get into the really exotic engine world.) There's several good quality engine builders. But the Vic Edelbrock signature series engine throws their very substantial engineering and manufacturing capability into this engine.

I watched one of their 350 cubic inch engines pump out 412 flywheel horsepower on a dyno. The engine was powering it's own water pump, so the output power was actually pretty realistic. I think that their engines seem at first glance apear to be a little expensive, but Vic Edelbrock is really dedicated to selling best quality products.

My opinion. I was one of a tour group lead through the Edelbrock facility by Vic himself. So, maybe I'm not impartial. Vic is a pretty impressive person. It's also impressive to see multi-millions dollars worth of robotic CNC machines automatically turning out aluminum heads, intake manifolds, water pumps. etc.
