I thought my linkage was causing problems but now there is a constant whining noise from I think the tranny. Its independent of rpm but consistent with tire revolutions and starts out as a low hum to a high pitch whine at faster speeds. The other problem is I cant down shift into second while moving unless I just let my foot off the clutch a little then it slips right in. Linkage checks out OK for now.
I know there is something bad happening. I want to figure out if its clutch going out or tranny. Tranny and clutch were redone 12000 miles ago. I've had the clutch slip on me recently but could the clutch actually cause these problems?
I'm no expert, but that whining noise is not a good sign, especially if it continues to get louder. Soon you won't be able to get it is second at all. It could be a synchro going out...
It might be useful to contact Muncie rebuilders for advice. Autogear.com, 4speed.com, 4 speeds by Darrell Shepherd,
When you find out the problem, let us know. good luck jim
Check the simplest first, You are correctm its either the clucth or tranny. But soimetimes, thier sub components are over looked
A frequent culprit is the pilot bearing. Many mechanics forget to replace them, or they never have been replaced. Its right in the center of the clutch plates, inserted into the crank itself, and its where the front tip of the tranny rests. A $20 peice. And pain if you have to go back in and replace it, 2 hrs labor, just to get to the peice. Remember, bearings "squeal" when they are shot
Another possibility is the clutch release bearing. Another $30 part.
Before you tear apart the tranny, replace both bearings, and that may do the trick
I'm not sure about pilot bearing since clutch in or out whining noise stays same. If I were to guess, it seems to be coming from tail end of tranny near driveshaft yoke area. I wonder if a synchro was going bad would you here this loud a whining noise?
