Default Need some help with my 82

I replaced the fuel pump a couple of days ago and everything went great, with exception to the fuel gauge, it was not giving me a reading. So I figured, maybe the float got caught up or a wire came loose. I go back into the tank, everything looks good. Wires all connected and such, float is true and proper. Put it all back together. Fuel gauge works, but the car won't start. I go back to the tank and upon seperating the fuel lines, I see that no gas is coming out. Obviously the pump is not pumping but everything looks to be in order. What is my problem?

Check the wiring on the flange, there must be a problem there. Is there voltage on the pump itself?

There is voltage to the flange. On the sending unit there is what looks like a solenoid that acts as a go between the Pump and the harness. Could this little mystery device be the problem? If so, is that an individually replaceable item or do I need a whole new fuel sending unit?

Yeah, that little cylindrical thing. i think it's a capacitor but never checked, it does work without it.

So then it is either a problem with the pump or; the wiring on the sending unit between the pump and female harness is bad, is that right? The pump was working when i first replaced it, and let me tell you, the difference in how this car ran was like night and day. The only conclusion I can come up with is that a new sending unit should solve this problem. Correct me if i am wrong, cuz I'd sure like to save $250 bucks.

I had a similar problem, my gauge wasn't working, turned out to be a ground short of the flange on the tank. BTW, do not run the pump outside of the tank.

Check the fuel hose that sit on top of the tank that connect to the pump, I changed mine when I changed the pump and it was a little work getting the send hose on perfectly because of the tight space.

No I haven't. I am pretty sure the seunding unit wiring is fried. It may just be a faulty pump, but I am inclined to think otherwise. When I replaced the pump a few weeks ago, everything was hunky dorie, except for a non reading fuel gauge. When I pulled the mechanism back out to check for issues and found none, I put it back together only to have the fuel gauge work, but not the pump. It has to be in the wiring on the sending unit itself. The tester light is showing voltage to the female harness the sending unit connects to, but is not showing voltage beyond the flange to the pump. Wiring right? It has to be. I am in limbo at the moment as a new meter is still in transit from the corvette gods. I hope to have it in a few days, as I surely don't want to miss out on Bloomington Gold. It would be my first one, and I'd hate to start out my life as a corvette owner on such a deflated note.

After all the wiring fiascal, maybe a fuse is now blown.

Did you check the fuse for the fuel pump?

Do you have 12V at the fuel pump.

You should hear a relay click on for the fuel pump after you turn the key to hot (not start)

Just throwing out ideas.

Brent.....

was it the pump itself? Always use a delco pump + new strainer, the rest is junk.
