Im almost ready to mount the diff to diff carrier and im wondering what would be the best additive to put in and whats the best gear oil?also should i use silicone on gasket prior to installation ? thanks muchly!
I highly reccomend Red Line Oil... it's a great quality synthetic oil, so it'll maintain it's properties for a longer time than a natural oil, and it really does lubricate well. It's a little bit more expesive than a natural oil (about $20 for your rear diff), but I think you'll be happy in the end. Just make sure to get the one for limited slip rear ends, and if you want it a little tighter, mix some of the NS designated of of the same weight in. You can get it from Summit, or some local auto-part stores might carry it.
I've got it in my truck diff and tranny, and plan on using it when I get to that point on my Corvette rebuild that I'm working on currently.

Some gear set companys do not recommend synthetic gear oil. When I rebuilt mine with new gears and an Auburn posi unit, they didi not recommend syn. but to use a good 80-90 dino oil with 6 ounces of GM additive, then after 500 miles, suck out the old gear oil and replace.
When I did the 12 Bolt in my Chevelle I used AMSOIL which required no additives. I even called them to verify it, not sure if it was a synthetic or not. Drove the car for almost 3 years before I sold it with some pretty good abuse and never gave me any problems.
