I have read several posts about Lars and total timing method.I want to start with stock weights and 1black and 1 silver spring like he sugests. My problem is where can I get bushings for the stock weights? The ones in the kits do not fit stock weights they are to big and I don't know if I can drill out the hole to make them fit.The bushings are not available through GM unless you buy a complete shaft asm.
As long as everything moves properly and timing advances (and goes back) according to spec, don't worry. I have half-crumbled bushings for years -- no problem. It was only when my advance mechanism froze up completely that I had a problem!
I decided it was bad karma to modify my original weights.
When I had floppy weights in I could hear the weights making a slight rubbing noise. I found that they were moving up and down and wearing on the underside of the rotor. I didn't notice any affect on my timing but I like to eliminate unknown variables.
Not sure were you got your weights & springs kit but usually the weights in those kits are lighter than stock which I don't get... That's why I got some big heavy weights out of an old Buick distributor (its good to have friends that have cars rotting in their yards ). I had to drill their holes bigger for the bushings to fit. Now it is rock solid.
