The front end of my '69 was removed by the previous owner. It appears that this was done "properly", by sawing through the middle of the bonding strips between the fenders and the hood surround, and removing the fenders and hood surround as three pieces.
Nearing time for reassembly (dreaming, anyway), and I have the original 'glas, but the RF fender is broken (I have all pieces); and only half of the valance panel.
I've found OEM new fenders and valance panels, and would like to use with my original hood suuround.
Question: is there any way to remove the remains of the bonding strips and bonding adhesive, so I can put it back together like factory?
Grinder will sure work, but I'd try popping some big pieces off with
wood chisels and/or sharpened putty knives. Even so, some grinder
work will be required to clean it up totally. Good job to do
outside when the wind blows toward a neighbor you don't like.
I would use the chisel and putty knife for the big pieces and if you want to use a little more finesse you can use a heat gun and the bonding agent will release.
In all likelihood, you are going to find chisels and a grinder will be needed. Some of the pieces will pop off with use of the chisel, but you will eventually have to remove the remnants of the old bonding compound and get down to bare fiberglass with the grinder. Things will get gritty and dusty. Wear a mask.
