1971 Coupe, 350, Automatic, Air, Tilt/Tel. I have to replace my ignition switch. I have ordered the switch, keys and cylinder. I have read the instructions in my repair manual and it seems straight forward. Has anybody done this and have any extra advice on this repair?
I think you mean the cyclinder, the actual "switch" is at the bottom of the column. As far as the cyclinder goes it's pretty straight forward. Just follow the manual and it will be OK. Take your time when it comes apart and you'll be OK.
If you do a search on the forum, you will find lots of help. This topic has been discussed many times. But I have to agree that it is pretty straight forward as long as you have the proper tools. Having a good steering wheel puller and a pick set helps.
I received the ignition cyclinder and switch today. Do you have to remove the steering column to replace the ignition switch? What does this part actually do?
yes, you have to remove the column to replace the ignition switch. basically, when you turn the key (and thus, the cylinder) it's attached to this long metal rod (via rack and sector gear) which inserts into the ignition switch. the rod moves a slider inside the ignition switch, and there is one position for each key position on the column, each position connects a different set of contacts in the switch, including +12V IGN and START.
disconnect your battery, and label all screws and bolts you remove for re-installation. you'll be fine.
also... be sure to mark the position of the starter switch on the column before removing it. the switch is adjustable by about 1/2" lengthwise on the column, and if you install it too far forward, you'll end up with a situation where you turn the key to "start" and the rod won't push the slider far enough in the ignition switch. But don't install the switch so far back that when you turn the key to start, you bend your rod.
if you run into trouble, report back and we can help you
You don't have to remove the coulumn to replace the switch. It is a little more difficult to manuever under the dash but you don't have to take out the columnh. The rack and all isn't part of the ignition switch. You don't have to go into the columnto do anything with this rod if you're a litlle careful. Maybe I don't understand what indigo is trying to say but I have never pulled a column to change the switch.
