Default temperature gauge not working

How can i determine if I have a problem with my temperature gauge or temperature sending unit on the engine. My gauge has quit working all of the sudden. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Take the wire off the sending unit and put it to ground. It should register full hot. If not your wiring or gauge is bad.

First, confirm that the wire is attached to the sending unit, then:
With the ignition on, momentarily ground the sender terminal on the gauge. It should read full scale (hot). If not, be sure the gauge is getting voltage on the other terminal. If the gauge works with a direct ground, either the sender is bad or the wire from the sender to the gauge is open somewhere. If you have voltage at the gauge and grounding the sender terminal doesn't get a response, the gauge is toast.
