Default What do those gizzys under the steering column do ??

I just got my '72 this weekend. I know that the wide black **** and two little round ***** under the steering column at the base of the instrument panel do something in the vacuum override system.

But what? (I don't have any manuals yet.)

Can anyone offer a simple explaination for these?

If the headlamp switch goes South, the **** can be pulled down the let the headlamps pop up.

they are override switches for the headlights and wiper door if you have one and the other may be the trip odometer....the vacuum override switches make it so the headlight doors and wiper doors will stay open perhaps in the event of snow or an ice storm

Default So what's the one in the center for??

Thanks.

OK I have an idea for what the little ones do. How about the big black one in the center?

I have the standard vacuum problems now, the headlights are up They weren't that way until I first started the car up. It sat for 6 years. I fixed a leaking vacuum line and now the wiper door is open also.

Like was said above:

The little ones operate the headlights and the wiper door.

The big one turns off the wiper in mid sweep for maintenance.

In a properly operating system, the overrides will allow you to open the headlights and wiper door even with the car off. I have yet to see a car with no leaks where this actually works.

Don't overlook the inline check valves in fixing your headlight vacuum system....they can bleed thru, and your headlight doors will wink at you....

Thanks again. I'll see if I can stop the wipers in mid sweep.

It looks like I've got to get the mighty vac out and do some troubleshooting....

You have watched the James Bond Movie: Goldfinger. The LH side **** is for the oil spray, the center is the ejector seat, and RH side is the knock-off tire shredder. Seriously, LH is Headlights, center turns off wipers for maintenance, and RH side is for wiper door activiation.
