Many thanks for all your help. The hose pipe suggestion helped me identify the squealing noise as a leak in my inlet manifold .
The leak was on the back passenger side of the manifold and I have temporarily repaired it with silicone until I can get a new gasket .
Extraordinary that it occured after fitting power steering; just to through us off the scent.

Here is more on that leak....at 90,000 miles I had a problem with no.8 plug oil fouling....went nuts trying to resolve it...until I pulled intake....seems the EGR valve cooked the intake gasket...guess where it is...?
