on a 77 the shaft comes out with the **** on it....i don't know if the ***** are permanently attached....to take the shaft out there is a small button about the size of a bb pellet thats on the bottom or side of the headlight switch...you press the button in and the **** and shaft pull out
I have a 74 also. I struggled with the same thing. I never saw a button you could push at the bottom of the light switch but then again I never looked. I ended up pulling the **** off the shaft. It wasn't that difficult unless of course at some point in time someone glued it on. The shaft has small blades on it so that it grabs onto the **** without pulling off during regular operation.
Bob is correct.
The **** is attached to the shaft. Yanking on the **** will damage the switch Bubba.
To remove the switch you'll have to do the following:
1) Remove the screws that attach the top dash pad.
2) Remove the screws that attach the instument cluster dash.
3) Remove the screws that attach the trim piece at the bottom of the steering column.
4) Remove the two bolts that hold up the steering column. Drop the column down 2 to 3".
5) Gently pull forward on the instument cluster.
6) Between the instument cluster and the upper dash pad you should be able to now see the switch.
7) On the passenger side of the switch there is a small silver button. Pressing on the button will allow the **** and rod to be pulled out.
8) Once out you can now replace the switch.
9) Pull the electric plugs out of the switch and remember where they go.
10) There are two retaining bolts that attach the switch to the back of the instument cluster. Undo these and be careful not to drop them down into the nether-regions of the dash.
11) From the front of the cluster if you look where you pulled the **** from, you can see that you are able to unscrew a front screw and remove the whole switch unit.
This is not a pleasant job... but with patience anyone should be able to accomplish it.
If you do remove the headlight switch, there are two vacuum lines attached to the back side. Be sure not to reverse them on installation, or you may be removing the dash a second time... (your headlights will not function properly)

Good luck... GUSTO
Actualy, I don't think it makes any difference if the vacumn hoses get switched - the light switch is either ALLOWING or NOT ALLOWING vacumn through the switch, so it really doesn't matter ...

doesn't it effect the routing through the override switch....

Unfortunately it does matter... I discovered this only after I had completely reinstalled the dash panel. I had removed the panel to repair the trip-ometer and forgot to label the vaccum lines.
