i got a 72 and im trying to get the door panal off with out the tool. i i could see a pic of how its assembled i could get it off... thanks.
I don't have a picture but you need a little hook. I took a small screw driver, heated the tip red hot and bent a 90 degree hook on the end about 1/8- 3/16 long.
I then go in directly opposite the handle part of the crank and hook the clip and pull it straight out. The handle then slids off.
It is hard the first time but after doing one it really is easy.
I then go in directly opposite the handle part of the crank and hook the clip and pull it straight out.
by stight out do you mean vertical or horizontal if the crank is horizontal. what does this clip look like? there was a little peice of metal but it does not move with the crank.
also, where is it located on the shaft. there are 3 diffrent places i can go in. next to the crank, behind the white washer type thing, or behind the black rubbry trim peice.
The clip is like a horse shoe. Open at one end. The window crank has a groove where the clip is exposed so a hook can hook the back of the clip and slide it straight out.
The crank has a snoot on the back that slides over the splines of the window mechanism. This clip falls in a groove on the mechanism but is inserted into this snoot. The only place the clip can be removed it a groove in the crank that the hook can be slid into and pull the clip, it is a wire clip and will slide out of the handle.
If the handle or cranking **** is say at 9 oclock you go in at 3 oclock and hook the clip for removal by taking the bent hook on the little tool you make and just going into this groove and hooking the clip out.
I would go in behind the white washer or between the door panel and the washer. Pull the washer away from the door skin and go in next the the panel.
They sells cheap tools to remove this clips also but I found the bend hook works fine.
The black thing is attached to the pannel by bend tabs on the back and there is no way to go behind this.
So between the black rubbery trim piece and the white washer.
Once you see one done the other will be easy.
The clip tends to pop off and fly away when you do the hook thing, so watch for it. Also, you need to go in between the white plastic washer and the handle itself. Often you can push the washer back just far enough that you can see the clip. To re-install, put the clip back on the handle and simply push it back on the regulator stud. it snaps on.

then search by part# 483350 and 1972 year
Click on the picture to get it a little bigger and the clips in question are the 4 little upside down "U"s . The sharp turns at the ends are what snap into the grove on the shaft.
Instead of a hook...an o-ring pick would work well, BTW...I used a little piece of sheet metal...like the size of a child's crayon...and pushed off the clip from the open side. You may have to press the handle into the door panel to release the tension from the clip as you try to pull the clip off...depends on how tight everything fits together. I had one dise that practically fell apart and one side that was a real bugger.
A shop rag will work as well, just run the rag between the **** and the panel, use a sawing motion at various angles and the rag will grab one of the edges of the clip and pop it off. No chance of scratching anything then.
i've made many a "hook" from a wire coat hanger over the years and just made one last saturday, my son's honda civic had a small dent in the door and removal of door panel was neccessary. anyway take a piece of coat hanger about 6 inches long, pound one end of it flat, a hammer and the anvil portion of a bench vise work the best. get it fairly flat, bend a 90 degree angle in it, and cut off all, except about a quarter of an inch. bend the other end so you can hold on to it while you pull the metal horseshoe clip. i usually use a wide putty knife to hold the door panel back, so i can see the clip, hook it and pull. and yes they do go flying, but most stores carry them if you do lose it.
