Numbers match ?

Numbers match ?
This will seem stupid....but when I bought the car i was told the "numbers match". Can someone tell me what exactly this means and how i can ascertain whether mine is a numbers matching car before I kill it with mod's ?

Numbers matching can mean different things to different people. In "general" it means that the engine block has the VIN deritive stamped on it. Look for a flat machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head. A/C compressor may be trying to hid it. Should be two sets of numbers stamped there. One of them should end with the same 5 or 6 numbers that the cars VIN ends with. If so this could mean that the car has the original engine.

Then you can go the next level of 'numbers matching'...like diff,tranny........basically anything that has a part number stamped on it! just depends how involved you want to get...pretty much every part of the car has a part number.
Theres a book out there called "Corvette by Numbers'...check it out or borrow it.
