Default Which steering box??

Hey Guys,
I hate the steering on my 81. I am too used to my 2000, and just can't stand the on center play with the stock steering box. I am looking at Steeriods as a final option, but I want to try a different steering box first.

I am looking at the boxes from Flaming River ($489) and Corvette Steering ($675). I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has either of these boxes.

Oh, and my car has 13G original miles, and just about everything steering related has been replaced to start from a clean slate. I even had my original steering box rebuilt just for the hell of it.

You still have a problem after a rebuilt box? Did you get any spec's on it? I have a couple of boxes left that I rebuilt to tighter tolerances then stock. They work pretty darn good on a C3 but trying to compare it to a C5 isn't going to work.

I don't think you will be happy with another gearbox. With just 13k miles it most likely functions as good as new. Spend your money on the rack and pinon if you want real improvement.

There have been good reviews on the Cherokee box for $675.00. I believe Norval is going to install it soon.

Hi Gary,
One of the problems is that I haven't driven a power steering car in about 20 years, so I don't know what is normal for this car. I don't expect it to drive like my C5, but 2" of play each side on center is too much to bear.

I had Van Steel do the rebuild. I didn't get any specs.

With 13G the original steering box should have been like new, but I decided to have it rebuilt anyway. I think I'm going to try either of these boxes before I switch to the Steeroids.

Yes that's the other box I am considering. I am going to call them tomorrow.
