ok, I am desperate here.. I put on a new 18 inch flex fan.. it is hitting my shroud in 2 spots, on the passenger side, I cant adjust it to move over any further (shroud that is) I really would like to drive it the car the 4th.. can I get away with filing over about a 1/4-3/8 of a inch on each blade. thats what it will take to clear the 2 spots.. the onlyother alternative is order a new fan.. I shopped around auto zone and pepboys only carries hayden. I like the one I got because it flexes under high rpm.. thants when the fan hits the shround, not during normal cruising, and I hate to drive with a handicap..
both motor mounts are brand new.. I shaved a 1/4 inch of blade and seeing my shroud was chew marks in it, I shaved a little of the inside where the motor torqs, problem solved
I couldn't find a 17" at the time, and the gap to a 16"
was too big (but it's what I used before I recently went electric anyhow.) (Or did the 17" not fit? I can't remember. In any event I have a slight body canting which accentuates this problem - as well as one nice, new, unused fan sitting in the mess of unused new wrong car parts.)
Before I went to electric I was going to rig a foam liner on my re-made fan shroud to have the barest minimum of gap from blade to shroud, which is crucial in developing fan "vacuum" through the radiator, since it's so far away from the radiator, particularly at the bottom.
I would be extremely cautious about altering the high mass, high rpm, crucially balanced flex fan. One member here or on CAC had one grenade on him. Unlike factory clutched fans, these puppies develop some incredible rotational momentum - any amount off would be greatly amplified and shred your radiator or ruin your water pump bearings.
