Thanks for posting!

I had heard there are some differences in the early differentials (63-64?). Is this true and if so are any of your procedures different? I just picked up a 64 4.10 that I want to go through.

The 63-64 are considered non-rebuildable posi's. Only 65 & up are rebuildable now.

Well thanks, I appreciate the candor! Only paid $100 for it to the orig owner of my car. Maybe I'll just consider it "disposable" and put it in for a while just to see what 4.10's are like in my car. It has a 3.08 now.

Positive side is that when I picked up the diff we went looking through mounds of stuff in his garage for other parts that belonged to the car. Found the original right dash piece and what look like NOS front and rear sections for the sidepipes. I can't complain!

I just had the pinion nut come loose on my 4.11. How should I go about tightening it back up? To what torque? The pinion backed into the posi carrier and left some marks (not very deep), and I noticed some very small cracks forming near one of the window openings and one of the cross shaft holes. Should I junk this unit? Or is there still some useable life left on it? I really can't afford another gear at this point, but if anything is usable I don't want to put it back in and grenade it either.

Well it is even more serious than I thought. Upon further inspection last night I found a broken tooth on the pinion. So I guess the only usable parts will be the housing and the caps. I ordered a new 4-series Eaton posi off eBay for what I think is a good price, $370 to my door. Much better than the $600 Summitt is asking.

This is the second gear in a year now. Granted this was a used gear that I just threw in the car, and it saw fairly extensive autocross use in another car before I got it.

However, is there any word out there that an undercar exhaust can shorten the life of the gear? My last one with a brand new ring and pinion only lasted about five years.
