Anyone thinking about ditching their spreadbore manifold for a square bore, I have one piece of advice: DO IT. I just installed the Edelbrock Performer EPS intake (27014) and Edelbrock carb (1406) onto my car, and the difference is absolutely unbelievable. I swear, my car feels about a thousand pounds lighter. I'm not kidding, I probably got 50 to 100 horse more out of this setup, mostly because my old setup was running so poorly. I've been screwing around trying to get my Holley 6210 set up for over a year now. I've rejetted it, messed with the accelerator pumps, put in new power valves, and could never get it working right (with that sales pitch, anyone want to buy a used Holley 6210 for cheap?). It would bog off the line, backfire when the secondaries opened, as well as just running poorly. I obviously don't know enough about what I'm doing to get it to perform right. I dropped the Edelbrock intake and carb onto my car, out of the box, didn't mess with a single thing, and the car drove like it's never driven before. I swear I have a new car. This setup wouldn't fit under the stock small block hood, so I had to buy the drop base air cleaner from Edelbrock and since that still wasn't enough to get me clearance, I had to buy a 2 inch tall air filter element. With that, I could still use the factory air cleaner lid.
The manifold looks better (I got the EnduraShine model), and this combination is just scary. My car finally runs like a Corvette.
I've been thinking about doing this for over a year now and I couldn't be happier about this decision. The best $500 I've spent on my car so far....
Just had to share.... (Haven't fixed my sig yet...)
I dropped a Holley 4160 for exactly the same reasons. The Edelbrock 1406 is a gem of a carb: very dependable and maintenance-free. I can't say that I noticed an increase in power - many will argue that the Holley is better in that regard - but for boulevard cruising the Edelbrock is hard to beat.
...I obviously don't know enough about what I'm doing to get it to perform right. ...
Which is really the root of your previous problems. You'd of had the same result with a new 6210 since it would have had new gaskets, straight mating surfaces, and the factory calibration.
wow, was the other way around for me. I installed and ran the 1406 on my old L82 for about a yr. and it ran a lot better then the Qjet but lost some wot hp.
But it sure drove a lot better and even i was able to tune it, for a carb dummy like me the holley was harder to tune then the EB carb.
Then in dec. when i installed my new 355 with holley sys. max setup (about 425hp) the 1406 did real good. i got a nice holley 750 dp that brettmc built for me and installed it and boy was like add'n 100 hp to it.
never figured it be that much of a change just in a carb swap.
I am sorry but then you had a really screwed up carb. Back to back tests show maybe 5-10 horsepower differences between properly setup carbs. You could have realized the same performance with a properly setup Q-Jet or Demon which IMHO are much better carbs than the Carter AFB that Edelbrock sells as a "performance" part.
Gerry- Thanks for restating the obvious for me. And I tend to disagree with you about the Holley's. My dad has a '67 with the exact same engine in it (L-79). He bought a brand new 4150 out of the box and could never get it to run right. He got sick of messing around with it and bought an Edelbrock. After setting the idle, his Edelbrock carb ran better than ever without changing a thing. Which is why I bought mine...
So, say what you want about which carb performs better, or whatever, but after screwing around with both my original Q-Jet, and a Holley, there's nothing better than simply bolting on a carb and having it work right out of the box.
And there's no doubt in my mind that my original Holley was running THAT poorly for me to notice that big of an improvement. By no means am I saying that bolting on an Edelbrock carb will give you an extra 50 HP, but in my case, since mine was set up that poorly, that's probably not an inaccurate guestimate of how much better MY car performed. I mean, it's literally like driving a different car. My old Holley would run pretty good once I got the car above about 3,000 RPM. It was just a dog up to that point.

I might be interested in the carb for spare parts. I've been running one for a couple years with no issues.
I'll straddle the fench on this one. On my current 335 I'm running the Edelbrock Performer EPS and a Holley 670cfm Street Avenger. This combo is excellent with my XE262 cam and 9.7:1CR. However, on my numbers matching L82 engine I have stock everything and the ole 750cfm Rochester QJet was just a great carb. However when I first purchased my 79, I did have to give the Qjet a little TLC and most people think they're too complicated to work on themselves. With a little patience and some good reference material, they're not too bad at all and are quite the performance carb.
Quite happy, to this point, with my Q-Jet set up for my 350. This may change with the 383 coming on line. BUT, ran an AFB carb on my '57 (I think that is what an Edlbrock is, correct me if I'm wrong) and was not impressed. Not really a performance carb, in my opinion.

Nice post on your results 68.
Edelbrock has a good reputation for bolt on and go parts. And i was about to buy & install a 14XX carb but lars helped me out and rebuilt my Q-jet for just over $100.
But i do use an Edelbrock Performer A/G intake and water pump - both polished and look/work great.
I just don't see how anyone could go wrong with thier products even though some are not the ultimate in performance. Edelbrock does a great job of keeping alot of cars on the road for a decent price. Bolt-on parts that work great and add a few ponies over stock too.
