new overhaul and new cam, now at 3000 to 4000 rpm the fuel pump is making a ticking noise, first I thought it was a lifter. is the new cams fuel pump lobe possibly not as high a lift as the previous cam. do they make longer fuel pump rods or do i need to replace the pump?

I had the same problem and replaced the fuel pump. The odd thing was that the noise started again after about 500 miles. I finally installed an electric fuel pump and put a plate on the side of the block. In both cases the operating lever on the fuel pump showed wear and was slightly loose... Good luck...
Replace fuel pump rod if pump is fairly new. Replace both for PM if pump is old.
You did good to find it- some say "impossible" to find.
The first time I saw that problem, checked the lash, etc.-all good.
Since I can see the engine running in my head, it had to be the fuel pump rod since the pump was new. Replaced to fix.
