Had a similar situation with my 80... Researched the forum and did the following to fix:
* verified that the ground was making good contact (on top of the tank sending unit just below your fuel door and cover)
* removed the fuel sending unit from the tank and used very fine grit sand paper and cleaned the sending coil (will have to remove the sending coil cover once you have the overall unit out of the tank). This fixed my issue.
* if it would have continued...then I would have replaced the sending unit. Go to the Forum Store and I noticed a group purchase for $69.
Let me know if this process does not fix your issue...
Almost certainly the sending unit. You can check the operation of the rest of the system by alternately grounding the wire at the sender and watching the guage. It should defelect full range each time you ground it.
