Assuming, of course, that all the mechanical advance is in by then. It should be, but he has no idea of what sort of springs he has or if they are working.

If the dampner is old that may be slipping giving you the odd timing readings.

If you rev it up and get no more mech advance its probably the same situation I had, weights fly out, pull in with very little idle screw change.

I like to set timing on the road anyway. Blast, no ping advance, blast, ping retard.

If the dampner is old that may be slipping (may have slipped) giving you the odd timing readings.

Engine should run after all you have done...IF...you are actually on number one. Pull the #1 plug feel with thumb pressure or straw or something else you can stick in there that the piston is actuall on up on top dead center. Note the position of the damper---it may have slipped before. Set distributer and number one by the piston and see if it runs.

OK

finally got it! After letting it dry out overnight, I went at it last night. I Set the damper at about 12* btdc, set the rotor with the #1 right one. Cranked and it wanted to strat, so I pushed the distributor rearward and it fired up.

Set by ear and hooked up the timing light. Rev'd to around 3 grand and set the timing to 36*. (good tip from someone here). To be sure, I set the idle, checked the timing. 10*. works for me.

Just for fun, I brought the damper around the 0* and pulled the cap to check the rotor relation to the number one tower. The rotor was just passed the number one tower. So, I guess whoever suggested setting the the distributor ahead of the tower, did the trick. I will be pulling it again to get a better angle for the tach.(oh ,oh)

Thanks to all. I tried everything suggested and some. Been wrenching for a long time, maybe too long, but it's always nice to have extra mechanics in the garage.
