I have a 71 without Tilt. I need to change my turn signal switch. I am trying to plan out everything before I start. I was wodering if anybody knows where the wires on the switch plug into. I can't find anything that says where the harness clips into. I want to make sure this isn't going to be much harder than it looks.
Just fixed mine. It was definitely a chore! Make sure you have all the special tools needed. I used 2 manuals: Haynes Repair Manual 68-82 Corvette and The Corvette 1966-82 Shop Manual. I used both because together they covered ALL aspects of tear down and reinstall. Good Luck!
Changing the turn signal switch on your 1971 C3 with a standard steering column only requires two special tools. You need a steering wheel puller and it is helpful to have what I call a "bridge tool" to compress the locking plate so that you can remove the round wire ring that is on the steering column shaft. It is also helpful to have a large towel.
You also can follow a step by step paper on the process by downloading the following papers from Terry Rudy's www.Corvettefaq.com websight. They are in the Steering Section.
Std Column Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 - Replace lock, key buzzer, turn signal lever, and turn signal switch - Revised 08JL05
Std Column Disassembly & Repair Pics #1 - To be used with Paper #1
Std Column 69-75 Strg Wheel & Horn Parts #1
Std Column 69-75 Strg Wheel & Horn Parts #2
Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 has a helpful hint in the use of the large towel.
