If you want a little firmer shift install a shift kit while the transmission is out. The kits are easy to install if you just follow the instructions.
I feel the 400 is plenty strong.
...I hope it breaks because it's the only way "the boss" is going to allow me to spend any more money.
Find a rough concrete street and do about 30 or so neutral drops with the throttle on the floor. You'll have a new trans on order as soon as the tow truck drags your butt home.

O.K., through carelessness and ignorance you can break anything. Actually, in the above example, I'd bet your u-joints or driveshaft goes first.
But a TH400 is as bulletproof as you can get.
GM routinely shipped (with a warranty) TH400s in LS6 Chevelles (and Corvettes) and Buick Stage I GSs and they both had over 500 lb ft of torque.

I know of a few 1000+ hp heavy street cars with stock 400's. They are pretty tough. Even if you do break it the parts to make it even more bullet proof are pretty cheap
Change the 2nd gear drum and roller to an earlier drum and 32 element sprag this was one of the weak areas. There are a lot of mods to do to them. I have one ready to bolt up to the engine I'm building now. The 400 will be overkill for this engine but it's all numbers matching.
Iused the B&M trans Kit which has most of the parts to overhaul one, but not all. It does have good instructions for rebuilding and mod'ing it too. Make up an stand to use on an engine stand and get a book and video and go to it!
Good luck,
Gary
