Default Rims for a '78

I am in the process of modifying my '78 and have checked into many different styles of rims. I have recently installed a Richmond Gear 6-Speed with a stage 1 Kevlar clutch. Will 8' tires be enough to grab traction or should I go wider. Also, if I go wider on the rear, should I do the same on the front (how wide can I go on the front?)

I have 10" wide P295 50-s and a 700r4 with 3.70 gears. I intentionally went with only 2200 stall and still there's no chance of any traction if I nail it.On wet roads I've accidentally gone sideways just catching second.
I did not have this "problem" with the 350 engine though. Not sure why........

Are those 10" on the front also? I'd like to be able to rotate them if needed.
