depends on the year of your vette. I don't know when they started to include an overflow tank, or otherwise created a closed system. In 1968, even if there was an expansion tank, overflow hose went right to the street. It is a good idea to add an overflow tank if your overflow hose routes to the street. Prevents mess!

If you have just a rad and it has a cap then yes you do since the rad will suck air in after cooling if no tank is present. The expansion tanks are set up pretty much like the plastic reserves except it is pressured and spits out directly to the ground but the rad will suck fluid from the exp tank back in as long as there is fluid present.
I have a 1969 and the rad doesn't even have a overflow hose hooked up. It just has the nipple by the rad cap.
Here's why I asked in the first place. I bought some Water Wetter and instead of waiting for the radiator to cool down and pouring it into it, I just poured it into the overflow tank. Than I got to thinking, Will this suck it into the radiator or not ???
For additives it is best to drain or suck some of the coolant out of the cold rad then put the additive in the rad so you know all if it gets into circulation within the cooling system.
