How doe you know when the Damper is properly installed on the crank shaft ? I used a install tool, there is about 3/4" clearance between timing cover and back edge of damper, from "point" on timing tag to front edge is 1/4". The gap a back edge looks "funny", but if I could move it back( I can't) I wouldn't be able to see the timing mark on damper. I guess I need to install the power steering pump and see if the pulleys align .. any thoughts ?
I don't see how... the c/s "snout" is 1 1/4" inside the damper and I only have 3/4" before the damper would hit the timing cover. Wish I had checked this BEFORE I pulled it off.
The harmonic balancer should go all the way on until bottoms out. This is usually right when it hits the crank gear. It actually helps hold on the crank gear as it is only key stock holding the gear in place. You can also tell by the wear on the balancer. It should be very shinny and clean where it mated up to the seal on the timing cover. Remember to change that seal when you install the cover. It comes in the gasket kit.
You'll know, as you crank on the install tool it will bottom out and cause the crank to rotate. Torque the snout bolt to 75 ft/lb and I use loctite 242 blue.

Ia sked this question not to long ago. Answer: The damper will not be flush with the snout of the crank....there is a small gap....that way the bolt is able to pull the damper against the crank for a secure fit.
