Default Determining converter stall range

How do you determine what stall range a torque coverter should be in? The torque on my 454 is flat at 475 lb ft (2500 rpm) all the way to 5500 rpm..but I'm being told I need a 3200 stall? Why? I would think I only need stall to 2500 where peak torque occurs?

You don't get the stall that is advertised out of a converter. Even a 3200 stall converter will move the car as soon as it is put in gear. If you lock the brakes and push the gas you will not get 3200 without breaking the tires loose.
There is also a flash point. Sit at a idle with the brakes on, release the brakes and at the same time floor it and the converter will flash and the rpm sometimes jumps higher then the stall speed.

I consulted with Art Carr Converters when choosing one for my 383 '69 Vette....their advice was the "optimum" converter would flash stall at or slightly below engine torque peak. To be more street friendly, a stall of about 1000 rpm below peak can still give good, but not best performance. At 2500 rpm torque peak, a 2500 stall would be excellent to take full advantage of your power. (Stalls higher than peak rpm can cause slower ET's). Mine stalls at 2700 rpm footbrake, but FLASHES to 4200 rpm. Engine torque peak is 4600 rpm. Your actual stall speed depends on other factors also, such as vehicle weight, rear gear ratio, and cam duration. I personally like to use least amount of stall to get the job done.....you'll be much happier on the street.
