Got the new heads installed this weekend. Car runs great! Much stronger now than it was! About 3,000 RPM it really pulls hard . Thought I would post some pics of the job. BTW, that is an Air gap RPM manifold that is fitting under the stock hood!
Block ready for new heads
New heads (well new to me) they were decked and had 5 angle valve job done to them.
Heads installed
New intake
Air Gap RPM close up
Carb and ignition
Finished...........time for a test drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what cam are you running? i would like to hear more about the power increase and how that feels. was it worth the $ to you? they say it is a good power to $ ratio.
looks very cool.

Still running stock cam and as you can see stock exhaust manifolds. I did not replace the cam because I am still researching which cam I want to run but will more than likely be Comp 270H or 292H. Well worth the $ spent! Got the heads for $300 so it was a super deal! Still only tuned by ear, this weekend I will tune it out correctly and retest the 0-60 times. I recorded the times before the install so it will show the true performance gain. I can tell you that the first time I floored it the acceleration was so fast that it shocked me. My wife was in the car and said "Holy S_ _t this thing is fast now!"
Thats the one I am leaning towards but looking at the 292 because I plan to stroke it. BTW, I notice you are from Austin. I lived in Luling for 5 years back in the mid 90's.
Cams are cheap, when you get around to stroking it, get the bigger cam. For now I would go for the 270H, thats what I run in my 355 and its great. I just need to get that performer air gap myself to make use of its range. I'm shifting at 6200 rpms and the performer I got falls on its face after 5500.
The wife's '77 ran awesome after the CompCam 262, Vortec, Performer install. Third gear started slipping almost immediately and three weeks later the transmission finally lost all grip in third gear. First and second sure are nice though. lol I just ordered my next fix/upgrade. I'm going for the 2004R overdrive transmission from BowtieOverdrives. I'm thinking of doing a header install when I do the transmission too. I hope the rear end holds up for a while now.
Anyway, back to topic, the Vortecs are worth every penny.

I am finding the same thing to be true. Before, when it hit second gear it would hit very hard and spin a bit. I now notice that when it hits second gear it is very spongy and I can hear the tranny slipping. Same story when I nail it from a dead stop. Just rebuilt the tranny less than 1,000 miles ago . Transmission guy who went through the rebuild with me is going to check it out this weekend, says it should be no problem to correct if it is slipping. Hate to pull it out again but it doing fine until now tells me that there has been a big power gain
