Default ventilation controls, part 2

69 non A/C vert. Moving the drivers side wheel of the heater controls has no effect on where air comes out (just blows mostly out of the defroster vent, with a little coming out of the bottom of the system)

I think my previous thread was a little too confusing so I have an illustration of what I've done. This is just lifted from the AIM and I wiped out some of the non essential stuff:

basically, if I clamp the hose at the location with the red arrow, I have good vacuum in the whole system. I have felt around to the end of the hose and it seems to be attached to the actuator, but I can't see it without removing the drivers side dash panel (and I don't want to do that right now).

Does anyone know if it is normal for this line to be "open"?
Or am I on a wild goose chase?
Anyone know of a troubleshooting guide for the ventilation vacuum system?
Is there any way to tell if the actuator is bad?
How do I remove the actuator?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this, especially with the last two questions!

Shrike,

None of the connections under the dash should be open to the atmopshere. If the line to the actuator is not holding a vacuum then the actuator seal is ruptured and you will need to replace the actuator. A quick way to verify if the actuator is bad is to use a hand held vacuum pump and see if it will hold a vacuum. Haven't worked on a non-air car yet but it wasn't that hard to R&R the actuator on my car. Two speed nuts, two vacuum lines and a linkage were all that was connecting mine to the heater box.

Regards,

Jay
