When I am engine breaking in 2nd gear my transmission kicks out of gear into neutral, or at least out of gear enough to grind the gears. This seems only to happen in 2nd. Like when I am driving down a slight hill and I want to maintain a speed, I take my foot off the gas and try to slow down, after a little bit of this it pops out of gear. It also happened when I was in 2nd slowing down to turn of a main road into my neighborhood, I took my foot off the gas to slow down and once again it popped out of gear.
What is causing this? Is it a linkage problem? Worn gears? Or some kind of detent/interlock issue?
same problem that I had with an MG Midget when I was a kid. I had to doulble clutch it into gear. That avoided the grind and no one else in the car had a clue the tranny had problems. drove it that way for years. never did bother to fix it.
UHHH....on an olde shark, the stock shifter is mounted on the rear cross support, with the rods going forward to the tranny, at least in the munices of '72, and so, make damn sure the shift rods are not outta adjustment, in that with reverse torque the thing is not trying to pop outta gear on account of never actually BEING in total engagement in the first place....
I have a synchro problem going into 3rd, from second and on the downshift from 4th. Picked up a rebuild kit from Medatronics Corp, these guys were the cheapest, I think it was about $160, much better than the $204 and up that are in most catalogs. Oh, by the way, have not yet done mine, waiting until the end of the summer. Good luck.
