I have a chirping sound coming from the distributor. I verified this by placing a stethoscope at the base of the distributor and the noise was loud and clear (chirp chirp chirp chirp). The chiring sound is consistant with the idle speed of the vehicle and disappears when the engine speed is increased. Is something going on with the camshaft and distributor gears???

Wow, you found my long-lost pet cricket!...On the serious side..there may be wear in the distributor shaft and housing. No way to tell unless you disassemble it. Chevy distributors are notorious for wearing out on high-mileage vehicles..
I had a spark plug wire that was making a snapping sound due to it having a worn a hole in the shielding. Check and see if you have a spark plug wire either not seated all the way or a hole in the insulation.. Just start the car in the garage and see what type of light show you have going on... Dave.
Could be the rotor contacting the distributor poles but if you distributor is a "tach drive", I would quickly pull it out and check the tach drive cross gear/mainshaft for grease before you quickly learn how expensive these parts run after the "BIG CRASH".

I neglected to mention that this is a HEI distributor.
I had replaced the torque convertor on this car three weeks ago.
The chirping sound was present prior to instaling the new convertor
I removed the distrobutor from the engine block prior to lifting the engine to remover the convertor. Upon inspection of the distrubutor, there appeared to be no wear present on the gears nor was there any play in the shaft.
