Ever since I've had my 76, it has made noise. Tonight, I finally figured out that the noise only occurs when turning (both left and right). I know that it's hard to describe sounds in words, but the closest I can come is a groan, like when my wife asks me to do something I don't really want to do. There is also a sound like a locked brake periodically slipping at the same time (you can only hear this at very low speeds). The noise goes away completely as soon as I am running straight.
Does this sound like a differential problem? If so, what is the best way to start? I have no experience with this aspect of cars so all help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
I've never done any work on differentials, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Where is the plug to drain the rear end fluid and how much new stuff do I add?
The plug is in the side of the diff, just adjacent to the right half-shaft...
It is a square plug, 9/16 inch. Add 1 bottle, about 4 ounces? Make sure there is enough room for it. You may need to evacuate some, using a fluid pump, zone sells them.
I just did this 2 weeks ago on my 75. The plug is on the passenger side diff half way up. I could not get to it with a wrench until I took off the spare tire carrier. Then I loosened it up a bit and took it to the quicky lube shop where they drained it, put my 2 bottles of additive in, filled it the rest of the way with their stuff and away I went. This stopped the graoning immediately. If you don't have your own suction device, I don't see how you could do it yourself. Anyway, someone here on the forum said you can get to the plug with a 12 pt. socket and an extension. This would keep you from dropping the spare tire carrier (which was not too hard--maybe 20 minutes). good luck.
Happy to report that replacing the oil and posi additive cured the problem. Got a few strange looks as I did my figure-8's in the grocery store parking lot tonight, though! Thanks to everyone for their help.
