My Mom and Dad have two 79s with one of them being numbers matching and the other has had a crate motor put in it. The one with the new motor is great but he does not like the 350T trans in it. He was wanting to know how hard it is to switch it out with the 700R4. (Something about wanting overdrive so he is not running 3500 RPM at 65.) :-)
Tim: I bet your Dad has a 355 rear end in his 79. 3500 @ 65 is about right for one.
Yeah we have not jacked it up and checked but we figured it was around there. He would just like to be able to swap out the trans for the OD and still have the nice pull of the rear end in lower gear.
I dropped a 700r4 in my 79 in 2000, about 2500-2700 rpm at 70mph, my tach is a little tempermental at times. got my trans from bowtie.od
and used a TCI lock up kit for 4th gear, when it locks up rpm goes down by about 200 rpm. I also have 3:55 gears in a rebuilt diff, rebuilt+ beefed up L-48 motor. whether you go with a 200r4 or 700r4 it is one conversion truly worth it.
I recently installed a 200r4 in my 80 best mod I have done. 75 MPH at 2000 rpm. Your 79 can even use the stock crossmember they changed in 80.
Be prepared some exhaust modifications will be inevitable. Ran alittle less than $1600.
