How much is normal amount of oil to burn on a completely new engine on cam break-in (20min @ 2000 rpm)
The engine is a 383 with a scat 4340 forged crank and H-beam rods, 10.5 compression, forged pistons, WP Sportsman II heads. I have a Canton 7 quart pan with a HV pump. The cam is a Comp XE274H ( with all lobes intact so far.){knock on wood}
After my break-in, I checked oil and found it off the dipstick.... added 3 quarts still not on the stick. I drained the oil and found 6.5-7.5 quarts of oil in the pan and probably 0.75-1 quarts in the filter (not yet removed). That means the engine burnt 1-2 quarts on inital fire up. Is this normal?
Has anybody had trouble with this oil pan and dipsticks? I'm running a factory dipstick and an MR gasket chrome tube that is ~ 1.5" shorter than than the factory one.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Did you put 7.5 litres ( 7 for oil pan. 1/2 for oil filter ) when you first started it up ? Did you look on dipstick where the oil level line was and scratch a mark on it ?
If you did put that much in and added 2 or 3 qts then it loolkes like it burnt it but I doubt that is what happened, some kind of mistake counting oil you first put in or a distick problem is my guess
oil burn is normal as the rings need to seat. BUT NOT THAT MUCH!!!! WHAT ARE YOU READING FOR PRESSURE ON THE GAUGE?? maybee missing a plug (internal or external), something is not right, CHECK THAT PRESSURE!!! are you smoking like an SOB?? out the exhaust??
