I bought a new steering box for my '69 within the last year from my local Chevy dealer. It was odd that it was listed for '70 only-I think that's why so few buy them from GM. It even included a new rag joint.
I hope to see lots of posts on this in the next little while. I feel this is a worthwhile upgrade and more should do it. You be our ginny pig and let us share the installion and testing.
That is before we spend the money.
Yes I need to get out in the fresh air more often. I was shoing yesterday and it was hot.
I have trouble distinguishing the smell of horse sh?t and money. They both smell the same..
Lets see I would have to shoe 7 horses for a steering box. Now that's 7 times 45 minutes or call it an hour. That's 7 hours of intensive workout, gallons of sweat but that's what keeps me in shape.
Hopefully their product is better than their site design.
Tom has very good products and is one hell of a guy. You shouldn't base a company on how there webiste looks. Tom is an older guy and he hates computer. He knows his stuff though. Look at Tom's differentials. Their website is not the greatest but everyone know he got quality parts too.
JLinNY,
I also contacted Tom last year, but he appeared then to have another style of box that required "shortening" of the shaft. This new box seems just the ticket. The website I agree is a little confusing - does the kit come with a Pitman arm or not? Is there a difference in a Corvette between manual and power Pitman arms? I believed that they were the same and that the two holes on the steering arms were used to mount the tie rod ends - outer for manual and inner for power, but the steering box (and Pitman arm) was the same for either system.
Your 1981 would have factory power steering and the relay (?) rod would be different from the one on a manual steer car. Does this make a difference when the new (Jeep?) box is fitted?
If Tom gave you a list of exactly what is in the kit, could you post it here please? That would make it a lot easier to understand. I will keep watching to see how your installation works out.
Hey if you don't like it, go elsewhere. I'll post those pics anytime I want. Me thinks you are someone who just likes to complain.
So did you have anything worthwhile to add to this topic????
Just a friendly heads up from a someone who hangs out a lot in OT...Seems like Troy might have something to say about your sig use attitude... See link (Forum rules and guidelines): http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...7&forum_id=109
And I'd also like to add that I've been eyeing the Corvette Steering box for a while, but keep hesitating due to my headers. I'll be watching you and Norval closely... Thanks for taking on the project and good luck to you both.

Thanks CG. I really didn't know about the whole sig thing, I went back and corrected my posts. Go back and read page62's post, and you will see why I took the attitude I did. That dude needs a lesson on how to talk to people.

Hey John,
This kit doesn not include a pitman arm, I will be able to use mine. This box still requires a shortening of the shaft, but as prosouth posted, it sounds like the shaft can be pushed up.
I will post pics of the complete kit as soon as it arrives. Tom is going on vacation Wednesday, but he told me he should be able to get the box out before then. I'm hoping to have it next week.

Remember I am not using a kit. I am starting with a almost new Jeep box , removing just one header, cutting the frame on the inside, welding in a 3/8th plate with bolt holes to take the unmodified box and at the same time trying to provide an extra 1/2 inch clearance.
I will also modify the stock control valve to jam it in a fixed position.
coleman racing sells adaptors for steering boxes to russel or any other standard high pressure hose. I will just have to find out which adapter fits these boxes.

Norval,
What effect do you think heat will have (if any) on the steering box since it's so close to the manifold? I am probably going to upgrade to headers at some point.

Our stock boxes are right against the header and they don't have oil circulating through them. I really have no idea and from others that have installed this box and there are some I haven't heard of a problem.

Chuck Harmon installed this box on his L-88. I have seen it in place, though I never got a chance to drive the car with it in. (Just as well, I couldn't drive stick very well back then either!)
Anyways, his car most definitely did have headers. It was VERY tight, I know, but it fit. Might contact him if you have the chance.

You need to learn humility and control your temper...that dude, as you referr, had a valid point about sig pictures.
I have one of these boxes in my vette and I love it. I did my own with a pitman arm I bought from corvette steering, but in the end I probably spent as much as they charge for the whole kit, so in hindsight I should have just bought the kit.
Getting the steering shaft to collapse is easier on some cars than others. Mine would not slide up so I had to pull the column...which meant rebuilding the column which was a good thing.
The kit Tom sells now has the output shaft modified to fit the stock pitman arm. It used to be a modified pitman arm to fit the stock output shaft.
I have plenty of clearance from my header, but I did dimple one of the tubes to make it easier to get the header in and out without removing the box.
Finally, I feel the box is a little too sensitive and next time I pull it I will have it rebuilt for less assist.
All in all though I feel this is a superior solution to the complicated steeroids setup, and a lot cheaper.
I finally made up my mind on what to do with the steering on my 81, and I went with the steering box from Corvette Steering. I just got off the phone with Tom as a matter of fact. Very nice guy. I should have the kit next week and I will post some pics when it arrives.
Hopefully I'll have it in before Carlisle.
I bought a power steering conversion kit, including a box for my Chevy truck from Tom. Really great parts and great service. Call him with questions and he will walk you through it. He seems genuinely interested in what he sells and appears to be expert with steering. man, what will we do when guys like this are no longer around?

Yeah and he could have put it better, don't you think?? If you scroll down I replied that I didn't know about the sig pic thing at that point. If you don't want people posting sig pics, why give the option?? Doesn't make sense.
