Default Anyone using HEI w/tach drive

having distributor fun and looking into upgrading to one of the HEI style tach drive distributors.

Anyone using one and your thoughts? Mild street perf up to 6K rpm is the plan.

I am also interested in an answer. I can tell you that I have a Pertronix II, (I just posted a question about it), and have no problems. However, I have heard that it is a good idea to keep an extra one with you, as they have left a few people stranded. I have seen two HEI tach drive units on e-bay in the last few days, and they both were at about $100 last time I checked the bidding.

Yup, I'm using a HEI with tach drive. Works flawlessly. These units essentially use stock GM parts for everything except the outer shaft. I bought mine for less than $200 from corvetteforum member "jackson". The price may have gone up slightly since then because I think he ran out of his first shipment, but it's still cheaper than any of the big catalog guys.

It's nice not to have to set points, but even more importantly, it holds its settings and replacement parts are cheap and plentiful.

Hi,

I am using a HEI tach driven on my 1974, and it is perfect. No problems, good response, and I am delighted with it. Bought new for $4??.

The only real drawback is that they will not fit under your original ignition (distributor) shielding. Everything else works fine and as everyone says they are pretty near bullet proof. If originality is not an issue they should be considered.

On the other hand if the appearance of originality is important, the kits like Pertronix should be considered. I've used one for over a year on my 1973 with absolutely no problems and get to use my original distributor and shielding. I did switch to the 8mm HEI spark plug wires by GM for a number of reasons, not the least of which is durability.

Good luck… GUSTO

Don't spend that kind of money- I have this one and I'll bet it's the same one at Mid America:

i have the msd billit tach drive distributer,,,and it fit under the origional ignation shelding,,also 6 al box and 8mm wires,,, i had a lot of problems with the origional distributer getting wet,,blowing tach drive gears, and it was getting worn anyway, since i changed over the only problem i ever had is when i blew the oil filled blaster coil,,,because it came with the car, mounted on the intake manifold, and it blew(because of a air bubble causing the windings to burn) the coil and msd box,so i rebuilt the 6a box,,and installed a 6 al,with a dry coil,,and gave the rebuilt to lars at the tuning tour this past may,,,besides that ,,,i have had no other problems with the msd system...
