I have a friend that has a stock '77 Vette with a 350 and auto trans. He wants to rebuild both items. I would like to know what the CF member recommend to get this engine to a 275 hp to a 300 hp level.
I am going to be doing the removal of both items, but I only want to address the engine now.The engine runs ok, but is weak as a puppy.
I don't remember the '77 model having much HP. Please give any help you can.

Are you doing the engine work? If so, are you changing out the pistons? Being an old car, if you are doing a complete tear down, I figured you would refresh everything while you were at it.
Engine should be stated- L-82 or L-48, both need better ex. See if it has dual ex. & see: http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/ganeyexhaust.htm
L-48 badly needs more cam, while the L-82 can make that level w/ ex. & perf. setup & tuning. Better heads rec. for both.
The son-in-law just had theirs (1978 L-48) redone with some head work, L-82 cam, performance intake mainfold and Hooker super comp headers, true duals, and is probably well over 250HP.
I dyno'd 240rwhp with my 77 L-48 with the following mods and a badly worn clutch:
-Comp Cams H268 cam & (obviously) new lifters.
-Weiand 8004 intake manifold.
-Hooker Competition Headers part number 2456HKR.
-True dual 2.5" exhaust with high flow cats and Magnaflow mufflers.
-Original QJet with primary rods 2 sizes smaller (richer) than stock and richer secondary rods.
-Recurved my ignition timing per Lars paper.
Now I have a brand new clutch but I still cannot easily spin my tires from a standstill. Once I get new heads I expect to be able to do so. I will then hang my 882's on the wall of my shop where they really belong.

I am in the same position and have the same goals as yourself. I have started my rebuild with some advice from the machine shop that is doing some of the work. Total Engine rebuild :
I am going with the $500 Vortec heads, the GM Cam that is found in the 330HP GM crate motor- Original Q-Jet and new Manifold. I will probably upgrade the exhaust as well. This should put me around 300HP...
Yes, I will do the complete rebuild of this engine. I am looking for CF members that have already done this or are in the process of doing a rebuild like this one. I find that asking for information from expericenced
people is worth it's weght in gold. I would like to get as much HP out of this engine and it still work with a slightly higher stall converter . The Vette needs to be somewhat a cruiser with some punch. If the HP level
goes to 350 or 375 range ,that's ok to. I'm not that familiar with the specs. on this engine, yet. What info. I need is what cam, lifters, rockers, compression ratio of pistons, timing chain set, heads and etc.
I realize some of this info. has been posted. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew what I am looking for.
I've had a lot more experience with the LT1's. I just finished a engine and auto. trans. swap in our '96 Vette coupe.
What I'm asking for is info. specific to this Vette, without having to do a lot of digging for the right combo. I would like to thank the members for info. already given. Please keep it coming!
