On another post, I wrote about replacing my harmonic damper. While going through this, I found that my power steering pump pully had a severe bend in it.
I think that I finally found the source of my belt whine.
While I have it out, I'm going to replace the seals, but I really need to remove and replace the pully. How do I get it off? It isn't bolted on and the pully appears to be a friction fit. There is also a collar in front of the pully that appears to be hammered on as well.
Your 1981 Vette has an interference fit pulley. You need two special tools. You need a special puller to remove it and you need a special tool to draw the new pulley onto your pump shaft.
To remove the pulley, the special tool will grip the undercut on the pulley hub and react against the driveshaft to pull the pulley off the shaft.
The other special tool will screw into the internal 3/8-16 UNC threads in the end of the pump driveshaft and push the pulley onto the shaft while reacting on the shaft alone. Do NOT even think of trying to press the pulley directly onto the shaft by reacting against the pump housing! You will break parts inside the pump.
My local NAPA store has the tools to do those. Pretty normal for them as every pump they sell needs a pulley swap. If you are friends with your local parts store you might get it done for free
