Default Which Carb would you chose?

Here is a simple question, that I am sure will get varied answers. If you where to toss the Rochester Carb on an 75 L-48, which after market carb would you pick? Looking for direct bolt on, using stock intake and hood. I have nothing against the Rochester, but this one has had a hard life... striped screws, bent and bashed. My plans are to rebuild it, looking for a good replacement in the mean time.

Thanks

Edelbrock 1901 if you can find one. It has been discontinued but a few are still on shelves...

It would have to be one of Barry Grant's Demon Carbs, modern carb, simple to tune and good tech back up

Jet performance or S.M.I (Sean Murphy Induction) both make great Q-jets.

Although I haven't replaced the Q-jet on my '79 I have used the Edelbrock with great success. Others that have used both the Holley and Edelbrock say the Edelbrock stays adjusted better and more consistently than the Holley. It doesn't give quite the performance but is a trouble free carb for everyday use.

Do it right. Spreadbore manifold, spreadbore carb. Square bore manifold, squarebore carb.

Come on Dep, I am surprised you didn't advise him to use a bubba adapter, Edelbrock low performance AFB clone, and some rubber fuel line.

So Steve...will you be using Western Union or Express Mail to send the $$$ for the mods you recommend? Why not just tell the poor guy to go out and buy a complete Merlin race motor??? He's got a freakin low performance L-48. Pretty much ANYTHING he does to it is gonna give him minimal results. So bubba upgrades are the best he can do on a tight budget.

Dep,

I think we are saying the same thing in different ways. Read the original post. He wants a stock replacement, direct bolt-on. Manifold, hood, fuel line, linkage. That means a Q-Jet. The only reason he would need an adapter is if he decided to go to a squarebore. He doesn't want a bubba upgrade, he wants a running car until he can rebuild his stock carb.

For the original poster. An Edelbrock replacment Q-Jet should work well. Just be aware that the Edelbrock carbs use a generic jetting and the truck rods (fat tips, leaner mixture). What you could do is buy a generic Rochester rebuild and swap the jets and rods from the original carb. That way, it will be tuned for the stock motor. Most rebuilds use a generic jetting. Swapping the jets and rods can be done in about 30 minutes. Get the Doug Roe book, Rochester Carburetors for good info on rebuilding a Q-Jet (with pics).

Steve: I stand corrected. You are right. I just can't picture removing a Quadrajunk and then putting one BACK ON

Dep,

We can blame it on our scottish friend who recommended the BG.

For race, go Holley or BG but you know I like the Q-Jet for the street. Heck I am pushing 375-400 HP through a Q-Jet and getting 20 mpg.

If your motor is still stock and you're not planning on rebuilding it with higher performance parts, I'd just get the quadrajet rebuilt and stick with that. A carburetor change, alone, will not give you much, if any, horsepower.

Hang on Dude...you can install a K&N Filter and get 25-50 HP and a Flowmaster muffler is good for another 35-50 HP.

Think you need an all forged assembly for that.

I put an Edelbrock on mine 3 years ago and never looked back. Easy to adjust, and it stays there.
