Default Header Wrap on Jet Hot headers?

Hey all,

I've currently got Jet Hot coated headers, but my engine compartment temps are a bit higher than I'd like. Would I see any benefit from using a header wrap from the head flange down to the oil pan? Thinking of the clip-on wraps from Thermotec/Cool-It... Any better suggestions?

I am going to wrap my headers and pipes all the way to the muffler.
I am going to wrap the muffler to . I am thinking it will
quiet it down some to..

I have heard some negative things about header wrap, but I
will find the truth out myself, I guess

pros and cons to both.........

pros

reduces underhood heat temps
conceals rusty headers

Cons

Absorbs moisture/can cause rusting
contraty to belief header wrap is flamable and absorbs every gas or oil leak which contributes to possible fire.

I know some people who SWEAR by it, but I have seen too many cars catch fire because of header wrap I choose not to use it.

Cockpit heat is NOT an issue. I'm just trying to reduce underhood temps so my wire looms stop melting!

Corey, good point about the flammability... I'll keep that in mind.

Wrapping my headers was the last mod to my car. I can't even begin to describe how much less heat rolls out from under the hood when I open it now. The engine also runs cooler and stays within 165-180 in city traffic now.

Been years since I wrapped exhaust, but it used to be some type of asbestos stuff...never was flammable...maybe regulations have caught up now adays and the stuff is different than it used to be?

Only other "con" I can see, is wrap voids the warranty on coating...also even voided the warranty on my SLP JH coated headers for my F-Body....and the SLPs or SS...gotta wonder...

But the reduction in underhood temps is a major plus...old vacuum lines, etc, that are brittle and dryrotted, need all the help they can

PS...I like the idea of the clip on ones, but I'd still get regular wrap and take down to the collectors.

i wrapped my hookers on an 11:1 1970 LT-1 and yes ,4years later there was considerable rusting inside the tubes and collector. however, i mostly ran 100 low lead avgas which may have contributed to the breakdown of the metal. i just wrapped my new hooker sidepipes .yes hooker animately says not to but to jet coat them was almost as expensive as they cost. Im doing the retro look thing with my 82 and i wanted black. the bottom line is that the wrap works considerably better than the coating does. if $ was not and issue the best solution would be wrapping a pair of coated ones. im in miami and ambient temp is close to 95. we need all the help we can get to reduce temps so the air conditioners have a prayer.

I have run header wrap for more then 10 years without a problem. Yes my wrap is finally falling apart but it is more then 10 years old.
I really like the way the wrap keeps the heat in and the engine compartment cool.
I will definitely rewrap my headers this winter.

Check out this link.

I was basically told the same thing when I asked Hedman tech support about using header wrap on my new ceramic coated headers. Hedman told me they will not warranty headers that have been wrapped. The oxidation is not just due to the wrap retaining moisture!

They are selling header coatings. The coating cost more then the header to begin with. If I was selling a product I would push it too.
I like header wrap. If done properly it looks good and reduces noise. After a hard run on the expressway you can still lightly brush the wrapped tubing without getting immediatley burned.
Any header I get will be wrapped.
A good tip.. Soak the header wrap in water for at least 15 minutes before wrapping to make it more pliable. Wrapped dry they don't wrap nearly as well.
Look at my above shot. That is at least 10 years old.

I've been saving up mone to get my Hooker super comps jet-hot coated, but if wrapping is more efficient and cheaper, then maybe I'll do that and save some money (and shipping)...of course it won't look as nice, but my car is a driver, not a show car. Thanks for the suggestions norval, I'm going to look into that.

Mine is not a daily driver. It is NOT driven in the rain where the wrapping will get soaked in water. It is about $100 CDN to do both headers. Mine is a driver too but only on nice days.

I don't drive my car in the rain either. I have enough trouble keeping the tires planted as it is

Bet I can pick up a roll for around $50 (got some old friends in the parts place I used to work at).
thanks for the suggestions

Not practical on a driver with sidepipes...

You need 2 rolls. 2 inch by 50 feet only does one header.

Summit sells a kit from DEI that includes two 50'x2" rolls, eight 4" steel zip ties and four 8" zip ties for $80. That's what I used on mine. Norval suggested that I soak the roll of wrap in water for a couple minutes before using it. He's right, what a difference it makes. Mine came out real nice thanks to that tip. I wrapped the two outside tubes down as far as I could, then I wrapped the middle two tubes together till all four were bunched together. From that point I wrapped everything together down to the end of the collector.

Sure looks better coated with no wrap
Maybe the heat is from wrong tuning?
