I had my starter rebuilt by a local shop for $80CDN. He upgraded it to high-torque windings inside. With a decent battery he said it could turn over pretty much anything.
I've got a bargain basement O'Reilly rebuilt in my 12.5:1 454, as my old starter chose the time & place for replacement. I've had it for over a year and it has worked every time. And I think it was around $24.95.
Ever hear of a motor called the L-88? 12.5 C.R. Guess what starter was used...a GM Hi Torque...std. BB starter.
But the new ones, are lighter, and can spin anything, plus draw less current...I have one, bought it from the local GM dealer. You can contact Summit, pick one up for chump change.
