Default mech advance only getting 16 degrees

I put in new springs in and then mechanical advance is free, but i only seem to get 16 degrees mechanical advance. I have it set at 20 at idle and 36 full mech and 52 with vacumm. I just thought that 20 was abit much. but the car seems to like it as no pinging is noticed. I am i missing somthing or is this ok.

Is the 20 degrees measured with the vacuum hose disconnected and lines plugged? It sounds like the 20 is with the vacuum lines on.

What RPM do you get 36 degrees at? Maybe you need some lighter springs; does the advance increase beyond 3000RPM?

That is the same as mine. And it runs very well. And it is consistant with Lar's paper.

If you're getting only 16 degrees out of your centrifugal advance there may be a advance limiter bushing installed in the distributer. Or possibly the slot has been welded up to limit advance.

yes the vacuum line is plugged and all mech is in by 2700 rpm. It performs very well like this so i guess i will leave it as is. Ran a 13.452 at the trach with 3.08 gears and treet tires so i guess it is not doing to bad. Well at least i think 13.4 is repectable..

Don't forget to read the part about modifying the mechanical advance and the part about the vacuum advance.

Not that you have to but it is good info.

Changing to lighter springs may have your centrifugal starting below idle rpm. If that's the case, a few degrees would already be added by idle. You can check by lowering idle as low as possible and checking timing. In any case, you've got 36º total and no starting problems so it sounds good to me.
