I fired my 383 last night, Comp cams mech roller, 1.6 rockers, AFR 195 heads, Holly HP 750 mechanical, Vertex Magneto, Hooker super comps. Anyway even after I got total timing set at 36deg. my center two header pipes were still turning red, though less then when timing was off. My running temp was about 210 deg. Any thoughts/advice?? I still haven't fiddled with the carb except for setting the float level.
Fiddle with the carb before you melt something. Unfortunately, high EGT can be a symptom of either too rich or too lean. Take a look at your spark plugs for a clue.
For me it was a combination of too rich a carb and retarded timing. So, yes, too rich can make a nice flame thrower.
I've always seen it in cars that are too rich. The unburned fuel ignites in the exhaust system and practically melts the headers. Interestingly enough, most header companies won't warranty their products on a new engine.
I would like to speak to someone from the Department of Rich A/F Mixtures and EGT because 3 years I've been on this forum and well I guess you learn something new every day.
