Default 700r4 Owners:TV Cable Setup Problem

Hi folks,

I just finished installing a new 700r4 transmission after my last 700r4 blew up. The TV cable is giving a bit of a problem. I'm using the same cable that was on the car.

The "throw" of the TV cable appears to be different on this new transmission. I have a pressure guage hooked up to the trans and I'd like to set the initial pressure between 90 and 110 psi. This is the typical range. I have to extend the TV cable pretty far out to get this reading. So far, that it prohibits full throttle.

That is not ideal.

I can't get this at the right pressure & full throttle at the same time. The only thing (I think) that will effect the length of the cable extension is the mechanics by the plunger under the pan.

Am I missing anything?

I asked my builder and checked a few places on the web like..
http://hotrodders.com/kb/transmissio...R4_basics.html

I wish it was that low.

Jack,
I am not a fan or spokesperson for BTO,as you may have read about my dealings with them, but they sell a TV setup that works perfectly. There's some pics on my website if you run a Holley you may want to look at. The kit comes with the bracket and carb cam that puts everything in correct geometry. My pressures checked out perfectly, per the BTO tech support.(I later blew the trans with a single 6500 rpm shift, but that's a whole different story)

You and I both had our issues!

This is their (BTO) TV cable & bracket.

I have a 200-4R from BowTie and I am pretty sure the instructions stated you look at the pressure with no pull on the cable and then attach and adjust so it's around 5 psi higher. Then they want you to verify any movement of the cable causes an immediate increase in the pressure. Mine is in the 70 t0 75 psi range in park. I thought the 700-R4 was the same.

For as many overdrive tranny upgrades as members of this forum have done there are not many threads that actually list the tranny pressures for all gears and neutral. I would have to search to find my data. I have it recorded somewhere and will look.

Thanks, the link I posted contains the pressures. I'm just concerned that running too low of a pressure will damage the tranny.

mine also was at 75 but wouldn't downshift so i called bowtie and they told me to increase pressure to 85 but still isn't downshifting correctly, haven't called them back sice i've been doing other projects to the vette. let me know what your data is and if yours is working properly. i installed a B&M cooler to bring down the temps, was running up to 180 in the little time i had it on the road to do the tests, how bout u?

My temp is typically between 160 - 180. I also have a trans cooler on it that helped a lot.

I think the solution to this problem is to swap the plunger mechanics from the old tranny. I noticed they were slightly different when I had the pans off both units.

i hooked mine up with the trans pan dropped so that i could see both WOT and the plunger being depressed.....this worked flawlessly and then used the pressure gauge to verify everything was set correctly. i also used the BTO stuff and also used there instructions.

Old Mo -- follow that link posted earlier.

The pressure should be in the 90 to 110 range. Most of mine were in the low to mid 90s when I called BTO the first time around.

Thanks Jack71; Mine is 85 psi in park. Don't know what they will have me do when I call BTO .
