i will be pulling my rad and wtr. pump this fall to detail my engine... in stop & go traffic it does get above 225. my question, can i clean the rad. tubes myself or should i take it to a rad. shop and get it boiled and cleaned... your opinions please
Awhile back I had the same problem of overheating. I had flushed it out once before, but it still ran hot. So I took my radiator down to a local rad shop. They checked it out, and I turns out that the bottom few inches of the rad core was plugged up. So I just had them recore the radiator. $165.00. Now it barely cracks over 200 deg. on a 85+ deg. day w/the A/C on.
Have had very good results w/ Prestone P/N AS100 ... it's a 2-part canister powder acid & powder neutralizer. Until a few years back, This stuff was widely marketed for decades. Rarely found in parts stores today.
BUT ... Prestone AS100 is sold through your local GM dealer parts dept ... it has a GM P/N (that I've forgetten). It is THE recommended cleaner in GM service bulletins and is safe for aluminum etc ... but IT IS STRONG! 2 years back I did a pickup that was clogged via Dexcool, last year did same to Towncar w/similar probs ... worked great. It is used by running it through & cleaning entire running car's system.
