I have a slight knocking noise I can hear thought the carburetor while idling. It isn't coming from the valve covers but from the carb. During normal driving I can't hear it, but when I get on it I'm hearing a knock. I thought it was pinging but I've adjusted the timing down to 20 degrees total and no vacuum advance and it will still do it.
The engine is a fresh rebuild with all new bearings. It is a hydraulic roller cam. The lifters are crane part number: 13532-16
When they were taken out of the box there were a couple that were stuck down. They came unstuck after soaking a bunch but I'm wondering now if one is sticking and knocking.
Is there some test I can do to each lifter to see if it might be the problem one?
If it's a lifter you should be able to hear it through the valve covers. Use a stethoscope and listen at each rocker arm. You will be able to hear the sound easily at the sticking cylinder. If you don't have a stethoscope use an old wodden broom or mop handle. Check out the water pump. Sounds like it might be a cam timing or valve issue.
I rechecked the timing gear to crank and the cam is 1 degree advanced. The noise over the carb did almost sound like a lifter not closing or opening on time. I have the motor apart now, so I can't use the stethoscope to listen.
The intake is leaking and since I'm removing that to reseal it, the lifters will be easy to get to. If I remove the lifters is there some test I can do to check that each one is working as it should?
The only thing I can contribute is on installation of new hydraulic lifters it is important to bleed off all air from lifter,or they may collapse.......
